5 Reasons to Book a Invisalign Consultation With Your Dentist

Feb 15, 2021
In a survey conducted on January 2-4, 2019, at least 84% of each adult generation felt that bad teeth negatively impact both your personal and professional life. But bad teeth can mean anything from cavities to crooked teeth.

If your biggest problem is that your teeth aren't straight, thanks to modern advances in dental technology, there are now options available such as Invisalign. Some people are still in the dark when it comes to Invisalign.

And for many adults, getting traditional braces aren't an option for a variety of reasons. If you've been thinking of booking an Invisalign consultation, keep reading.

We're sharing with you five reasons to schedule that appointment.

What Invisalign Is

Invisalign is a clear orthodontic device that's made of plastic. It's a form of braces used to adjust teeth.

These aligners come in pairs numbering 18 to 30. All aligners are custom-made to fit tightly over the top and/or bottom teeth.

Treats a Range of Oral Issues

Invisalign is fully removable and easy to clean. Invisalign treats problems such as:

  • Open bites
  • Crossbites
  • Gaps
  • Uneven tooth lengths
  • Overbites
  • Underbites
  • Crowding

Invisalign also helps correct tooth rotation and tooth tipping.

What You'll Learn at an Invisalign Consultation

If you're wondering, "should I get Invisalign" a trip to your dentist can quickly help you make that decision. Take the opportunity to write down any questions you have on a piece of paper so you don't forget them.

During the exam, your dentist will perform an examination.

Examinations Your Dentist Performs

He or she looks at the following:

  • X-rays to determine root positioning and the health of your jawbone
  • Bite registration to see how your upper and lower teeth fit together
  • Dental impressions to get an imprint of your teeth
  • Full-face and photos from various angles are taken

Eight Invisalign photos are required for every case to ensure your fit is custom-made.

The Prescription is Made

Once it's determined you're a good candidate, your dentist fills out a prescription for Invisalign. Everything is sent to the lab where Invisalign technicians use that information to create an animation showing the sequence in which your teeth move to their final resting space.

Once the treatment model is approved by your dentist, your aligners are then produced.

Your Treatment Begins

Once your aligners are made and sent back to your dentist, you're ready to begin treatment. Your dentist will explain at your next appointment how long you should wear your Invisalign aligners every day.

He or she will also explain how to care for them. You'll receive instructions on when to switch to a new set.

1. Invisalign Looks and Feels Great

While getting braces as a kid is a right of passage, it's not as easy when you're an adult. Many adults like the braces results, just not the look of them while they're going through treatment.

And that can prevent some adults from living a life where they feel confident smiling. Thankfully, one of the biggest benefits Invisalign has is that it's virtually invisible.

That's because they're made from clear, think plastic. It's often difficult for most people to even notice you're wearing them.

Comfort

Traditional braces often involve brackets and/or wires. These can scrape against your tongue, gums, and cheeks and it's very uncomfortable.

Invisalign is customized to fit your teeth perfectly. While there is some initial soreness every time you change trays, but it typically lasts 24 hours or less.

After the first day, there shouldn't be any noticeable discomfort. Since you can remove them, if you play a sport or instrument, there's no need to worry about your Invisalign causing pain.

2. They're Convenient

While one major convenience is that they're clear, there are plenty more. You receive your replacements every one or two weeks but if you do misplace one or two, that's okay.

Invisalign offers up to six free replacement trays free of charge.

No Need to See a Specialist

You also won't have to shuttle back and forth to the dentist as much. Typically, patients only need to visit their dentist every four to six weeks. And since your dentist can provide you with Invisalign, you won't have to see a specialist such as an orthodontist in order to achieve perfect teeth.

Since they're removable, you don't have to worry about getting food stuck in your teeth as you eat. You also won't have to avoid eating or drinking anything like you would if you had traditional braces placed on your teeth.

Faster results

The more you wear Invisalign, the more quickly your teeth straighten. By wearing your aligners 20-22 hours every day, you can actually speed up your Invisalign treatment time.

That's not something most other methods can do.

Easy to Clean

Invisalign is easy to keep clean. Always rinse your aligners after removing them since saliva and plaque retain bacteria.

You should soak your aligners using Invisalign crystals or denture cleaner. Then clean your aligners using a clear anti-bacterial soft soap. Next, carefully brush your aligners.

Always brush and floss your teeth before you reinsert your aligners.

3. They Protect Your Teeth

Braces can cause your gums to recede. It's also hard to floss and brush your teeth wearing traditional metal braces.

With Invisalign, the trays are removable. You can easily floss and brush your teeth carefully. This will help you prevent any tooth decay or additional oral health issues from arising when wearing them.

Acts as a Barrier

In fact, Invisalign can help protect your teeth from the following issues:

  • Tooth discoloration
  • Difficult eating
  • Plaque buildup
  • Tooth decay
  • Injuries caused by brace wires
  • Mouth sores

If you grind your teeth, wearing your Invisalign helps protect your teeth from wear and tear. And if you're active, wearing Invisalign serves as a protective mouthguard.

4. They Can Help Protect and Improve Your Overall Health

Crooked teeth aren't just unsightly, they can lead to poor health both physically and mentally. Crooked teeth are harder to keep clean which can lead to a build-up in plaque, tartar, and bacteria.

If not treated properly, that can lead to gum disease and cavities. And that's when your oral health begins affecting your mental and physical health.

The Link Between Oral & Mental Health

Data shows a direct link between oral and mental health.

In fact, the data shows that almost two-thirds of those living with depression experienced a toothache within the last year. And half of those with depression rated the condition of their teeth as poor or fair.

Mood Conditions & Gum Disease

There are also links between gum disease and mood conditions such as:

  • Distress
  • Stress
  • Anxiety

Even loneliness was linked with gum disease.

The Link Between Oral and Physical Health

Unhealthy gums and teeth can also severely impact our physical health.

Bacteria from the inflammation of gums and periodontal disease can enter your body through your bloodstream.

Health Issues Linked to Poor Oral Health

Once that bacteria is in your bloodstream, it can travel to different parts of your body and cause the following health issues:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Dementia
  • Respiratory infections
  • Diabetic complications

Continue brushing and flossing regularly while going through Invisalign treatments to keep up your oral health.

Smiling Helps Improve Health

Invisalign helps you improve your smile. And studies show that smiling helps reduce the following health conditions:

  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Lowers heart rate
  • Reduces stress

Another study suggests that smiling can lead to a longer life.

5. Invisalign is Cost-Effective

Invisalign isn't cheap, for most people, it's the only treatment they'll need to enjoy a lifetime of beautiful, healthy teeth. How much Invisalign costs depends on the patient and how complex the situation is.

Most dental offices offer flexible payment plans for Invisalign patients.

Also, Invisalign is usually covered by most dental insurance companies. Talk to your dental insurance company to make sure they will cover your treatments before you begin.

Flexible Savings Accounts

An FSA (flexible savings account) often lets you pay for dental costs such as Invisalign. This is managed by your employer and you can pay money into your account throughout the year.

You can set aside up to $2,600 annually to help you pay tax-free for your Invisalign.

Health Savings Accounts

An HSA (health savings account) is a special account designed to help people with high-deductible insurance plans. Like FSA's you put money into your savings account tax-free.

You can then use that money to cover medical, dental, and orthodontic costs, including Invisalign. You can set aside $3,400 annually for individuals or $6,750 for families.

However, to open an HSA, you must meet IRS eligibility requirements.
