Dental Implants in Mississauga and Stoney Creek

Dental implants are a long-lasting solution for restoring a patient’s smile and confidence.

Dental implants replace missing teeth. They look and function just like normal teeth. However, implants are not limited to patients who are missing a single tooth – they are useful for fully edentulous patients, too

What is a Dental Implant?

An implant is a titanium or zirconia screw placed into the jawbone. While a patient is healing from their implant surgery, the implant will slowly integrate into the bone, allowing it to be just as secure as a natural tooth.

Once the patient has healed completely, we will proceed with crown, bridge, or denture work.

Crown

To replace a single missing tooth, an abutment is affixed to the implant. A dental crown will fit over the abutment. The crown is made of porcelain, gold, or porcelain fused to metal. The crown looks like a real tooth. Patients can chew just about anything and clean their implant crown just like a real tooth.

Bridge

A bridge allows us to replace multiple missing teeth. It consists of two abutment crowns anchored to two dental implants that replace the missing teeth, kind of like two bookends. The bridge also consists of a pontic, a fake tooth that replaces the missing middle tooth. The pontic is not attached to an implant.

Dentures

Dental implants can make a full or partial denture more secure. One or two implants can be used to secure a partial denture, while four to six anchor a full denture. Instead of placing an abutment and crown on the implant, we place clips on the implants as well as the denture, allowing it to snap into place.

Dental Implant Treatment – What Are the Benefits?

The main reason to consider investing in dental implant treatment is because of their durability. Implementing good hygiene practices and regular dental visits can help implants to last for decades, if not a lifetime.

Implants also offer a tremendous amount of security. Edentulous patients do not have to worry about their dentures slipping while they talk or eat.

It is also easier to care for dental implants. Patients with implants and crowns brush and floss as normal. Our hygiene department also provides edentulous patients with home hygiene instructions and the tools they need to clean their dentures and implants properly.

Restoring a missing tooth or teeth with implants can also help prevent:

Gum disease

Broken teeth

The Dental Implant Process

Here is what patients can expect when they see us for implants:

Implant Consultation:

A comprehensive examination allows us to determine whether implants are the best option, in addition to evaluating whether the patient is a good candidate for implants. We will perform an oral examination and take dental x-rays to assess the health of the remaining teeth and the jawbone.

Implant Placement:

During the first surgery, we will extract the tooth if necessary and replace the missing tooth with the implant screw. Patients are fully anesthetised during the procedure to ensure maximum comfort.

Abutment Placement:

After a four- to six-month healing period, we will perform a second minor surgical procedure. We incise the gum tissue over the implant and place a healing cap on top of the screw. The healing cap allows the patient’s gums to heal in a way that provides us access to the implant so we can place the abutment and crown over it.

Crown, Bridge, or Denture Placement:

Two to three weeks later, we affix the crown, bridge, or denture to the implant.

Dental Implants Explained: FAQs

Below, we answer some commonly asked questions about dental implants.

How much are dental implants?

The price varies depending on the patient’s needs. We will provide a precise cost estimate based on a personal implant consultation.

Will it hurt?

Patients are fully anesthetised during the procedure. After surgery, soreness may occur. If necessary, we will prescribe painkillers to manage discomfort.

What can I expect after the procedure?

We recommend consuming soft foods and liquids for the first few days. Patients should avoid smoking, which can lead to infection, and take any pills as prescribed. Minimize swelling with anti-inflammatories, ice, and keeping the head elevated.
