Children

Children’s Dentist in Mississauga & Stoney Creek.

When a child sees a children’s dentist at an early age, we can help protect them from dental diseases, while keeping their smile healthy and beautiful!

A family dentist is someone that has the patience, knowledge, and experience to provide excellent dental treatment for kids.

4 Reasons to See a Children’s Dentist

Children should see a children’s dentist in their early years to evaluate their teeth and jawbones. If there are any issues, the dentist can provide the child with the following treatment options:

1. Braces for Kids

If a child has jawbone and/or teeth misalignment issues, they will need orthodontic treatment to correct their bite.

Some options we offer include:

The type of dental appliances a patient receives will depend on their unique needs. Each case is different, and some are more complex than others. This results in varied treatment plans amongst patients even within the same family.

2. Advanced Orthodontic Treatment

In complex orthodontic cases, children need more than just braces or clear aligners – they need functional appliances. These appliances will correct jaw issues, such as a complex overjet, a narrow maxilla (upper jawbone/palate), or a crossbite. Such appliances can also help with a child’s oral/facial muscle development.

Functional appliances for kids include both fixed and removable appliances:

  • Headgear
  • Activators
  • Palatal expanders

3. Space Maintenance

Space maintenance for kids is vital to the health and function of their adult teeth. Children are supposed to lose their primary teeth at a specific time during their development.

Sometimes things do not happen on schedule. Reasons for early primary tooth loss include trauma and deep decay.

If a child loses a tooth early, their successor tooth does not automatically come into their mouth. The tooth simply is not developed enough to enter the mouth.

The space where the primary tooth used to be, needs to be maintained. If it is not, the adjacent teeth will shift, closing the gap and making it difficult for the permanent tooth to erupt. Additionally, when the primary teeth shift, it can lead to a shift in how the other adult teeth erupt, causing crowding and crookedness.

We use dental appliances that fit around one of the adjacent teeth and have a bar or loop on one side that fills in the gap, thereby maintaining it.

4. Fillings for Kids

A child can develop dental decay due to the type and amount of bacteria in a child’s mouth, as well as their diet and home care practices.

Our caring, compassionate team wants to make our pediatric patients feel as comfortable as possible during their filling appointments. This is one reason why we want to catch dental decay earlier. The shallower the filling, the faster and more comfortable it will be to fill the tooth.

How are fillings done?

After numbing the child, we remove the decay. Then, we will condition and prime the tooth surface. After that, we will apply an adhesive bonding agent. We will then apply a tooth-colored composite resin filling material, shape it, and harden it with ultraviolet curing light. Once finished, we will check the patient’s bite to make sure there are no high spots, and then, we will polish the filling. By the time we are finished, patients cannot even tell where the filling is!

Why See a Children’s Dentist in Mississauga for Preventative Care?

In addition to seeing a children’s dentist for restorative treatment, preventative care is paramount to the health of a child.

Good oral health helps reduce the child’s risk for dental decay and gum disease. Additionally, when a child has healthy dentition, they’re able to chew their food properly and comfortably. When a child can chew thoroughly, they digest their food properly and get essential nutrients.

A child should see their children’s dentist every six months for:

A comprehensive oral evaluation

During these appointments, we will also review dental habits and homecare practices with both the parents and their child, including:

Brushing

Flossing

Infant tooth care
