Everything You Need to Know About Adult Braces - What to Know

Oct 03, 2019

Some people are born with a natural, picture-perfect smile, but most have to deal with crooked, misaligned teeth. When it comes to correcting alignment, bite issues, and bringing back the confidence behind your smile, braces are a highly effective form of orthodontic treatment.

Why Do People Need Braces?

Braces and other forms of orthodontic treatment help alignment problems such as overbite, underbite, overcrowding of teeth, crooked teeth, or even jaw misalignment. Beyond serving to fix cosmetic damages, braces help ease problems with eating and speech.

Additionally, failing to fix your crooked teeth can compromise your oral hygiene. For instance, an improper bite may make it difficult to brush or floss your teeth. Meanwhile, an underbite can lead to a negative impact with your jaw as the upper front set collides with the lower front set.

For that reason, orthodontic treatments like braces for adults are necessary to help realign the teeth. Additionally, it helps support the positioning of your jaw and sustain the new alignment.

What are the Benefits of Braces?

Having improper positioning of the teeth can mitigate many things - from tooth decay, gingivitis, and even low self-esteem. With that in mind, orthodontic treatments like braces is an effective procedure that can help solve the following dental issues:

● Close gaps between teeth
● Ensure that your teeth and jaw are properly aligned
● Straighten crooked teeth
● Improve oral functions such as eating and speech, which may have been originally impaired due to a bad bite
● Mend improper bites

Who Needs Braces?

A dentist will need to examine the state of a patient’s teeth in two ways: create a plaster model of their teeth or have their X-ray taken. Braces are recommended for thus suffering from the following:

● Overbite - the state where the upper front teeth are sticking too far forward over the lower teeth, which is also known as having buck teeth.

● Underbite - also known as a bulldog, this is where the lower teeth are too far forward over the upper teeth.

● Crossbite - this is when the upper front teeth and lower front teeth meet in the middle when biting down.

● Open bite - this includes spaces in between the biting surfaces of the front or side teeth upon biting down.

● Misplaced midline - this is a case where the center of your upper front teeth is misaligned from the center of your lower front teeth.

● Spacing - this means that there are gaps or spaces in between your teeth

● Crowding - the opposite of spacing, this is a case where there are too many teeth for the dental ridge to handle.

Modern Braces for Adults: Invisalign

Invisalign is a modern solution and alternative to braces. These ‘adult braces’ are made of clear aligner trays and work similarly to retainers. It is a clear, smooth, and durable plastic that is moulded into a set of nearly invisible aligners. However, you will need to visit your dentist every two weeks to adjust the tightness according to what your teeth needs.

The flexibility it provides makes it ideal for everyday use as it does not limit what you can eat or drink. Additionally, it makes it easier for you to maintain proper oral hygiene compared to traditional braces.
