Zoom Whitening from A-Z

Aug 14, 2020
Maybe you have a wedding coming up? Perhaps you're due for a job interview? Whatever the case may be, you're looking to whiten your teeth as much as possible.

While you have a number of options available to you, you're likely to find the best results with Zoom Teeth Whitening. An in-office procedure, it's both quick and effective.

Looking to learn more about Zoom whitening? Then read on. This is the guide for you.

What Exactly is Zoom Teeth Whitening?

Simply put, Zoom Teeth Whitening is the most effective teeth whitening procedure available on the market today. It's a bleaching procedure wherein the dentin and enamel of the teeth are brightened by several shades. Taking place in a dentist's office, it is carried out by a licensed dentist.

Unlike with home teeth whitening procedures, Zoom Teeth Whitening makes use of light. This light, working in tandem with hydrogen peroxide gel, causes the teeth to take on a drastically brighter shade in just a short amount of time.

Each Zoom session takes a little under 60 minutes to complete. This includes preparation, the procedure itself, and any necessary cleanup.

Zoom Teeth Whitening: Going Through the Procedure

We've discussed the basics of Zoom Teeth Whitening. Now, we're going to get into the specifics of the procedure itself, discussing every step involved. Let's go.

Consult With the Dentist

Before the procedure begins, your dentist will speak with you about what's going to happen. This will serve as an opportunity during which you can learn and ask relevant questions. It will also give you a chance to back out of the procedure in the event that you decide that it's not right for you.

In some cases, this consultation will be coupled with a tooth cleaning session. Note, though, that if your teeth have been cleaned recently, cleaning won't be necessary at this time.

Prep for the Procedure

Once you're done consulting with your dentist, you can begin prepping for the procedure. This starts with the covering of the lips and the gums. The lips and gums are covered with a resistant substance, ensuring that only the teeth are exposed to the whitening gel and the whitening lamp.

You will also wear a special pair of sunglasses. These will shield your eyes from the effects of the whitening lamp, ensuring that they aren't harmed in the course of the procedure.

Undergo the Procedure Itself

Now that precautions have been taken, the procedure can begin. The dentist will begin the procedure by applying the Zoom whitening gel to your teeth, leaving no spot uncovered.

Once the gel has been applied, the dentist will turn on the whitening lamp. It will remain on for approximately 15 minutes, effectively baking the whitening gel into the dentin of your teeth.

Once these 15 minutes have passed, a break will begin, giving you a few minutes to relax. Then, the lamp will be turned on once again, providing your teeth with at least 2 more 15-minute whitening sessions.

Throughout the procedure, you will be sitting in one place. If you wish, you can watch TV while the procedure is going on. While you might experience some tooth discomfort or sensitivity, it's only minor.

Receive Fluoride Treatment

Though it might not be the case with you, in some cases, the dentist will apply a fluoride treatment to the teeth after the whitening procedure has been completed. This can help with tooth sensitivity, making the recovery process as comfortable as possible.

Zoom Whitening Aftercare

Just because the procedure has ended doesn't mean that the results have yet set in. If you want your whitening session to be as successful as possible, you need to engage in some post-procedure care. This includes the following.

Stay Away from Trouble Foods

For the next 48 hours following your whitening session, you're advised to avoid foods that could stain your teeth. These include coffee, wine, soda, potato chips, soy sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, berries, and citrus fruits.

Eating these foods within the 48-hour window could reverse the effects of the whitening procedure, effectively making it useless.

Avoid Colored Dental Hygiene Products

Not only do you need to avoid specific trouble foods in the 48 hours following the procedure but colored dental hygiene products as well. If your toothpaste or mouthwash contains a bright color, it could very well stain your teeth.

Cease Smoking

Smoking can have a major detrimental effect on the color of your teeth. As such, you're advised to stop smoking for the 48 hours directly following the procedure. If you want long-term results, however, you'll have to stop smoking for good.

Tend to Your Teeth and Gums

Receiving a whitening treatment is no excuse to stop tending to your teeth and your gums. Make sure that you're brushing and flossing twice a day and once a day, respectively. Doing so will prevent the buildup of plaque, thus preventing tooth discoloration over time.

Make Use of the Take-home Whitening Trays

In most cases, after the procedure has been completed, the dentist will provide the patient with take-home whitening trays. These trays allow the patient to whiten his or her teeth a few more times in the days following the procedure.

It's imperative that you use these trays. They will strengthen the effects of the in-office procedure and provide you with the longest-lasting results possible.

Zoom Whitening Cost

The cost of Zoom whitening averages around $500. This cost includes the in-office procedure as well as the take-home whitening trays, which allow you to prolong your results.

Note, in the vast majority of cases, Zoom Whitening will not be covered by dental insurance. Of course, exceptions exist, and your insurance policy could be one of them. Make sure to give your insurance company a call prior to the procedure.

Are There Any Risks Associated With Zoom Whitening?

By and large, there are no risks associated with Zoom Whitening. At most, you might experience some tooth and gum sensitivity in the few days following the procedure. This is because the light used to solidify the whitening gel can have a slight burning effect.

Apart from that, there's nothing to worry about. This is a safe, straightforward, cosmetic procedure. There's never an occasion in which the pros don't far outweigh the cons.

What Causes Tooth Discoloration?

Now, you might be wondering: what causes tooth discoloration in the first place? There are a number of factors, the most prominent of which we'll discuss below.

Specific Drinks

There are a number of drinks that can lead to tooth discoloration. These drinks include but aren't limited to soda, coffee, wine, and juice. When not instantly washed away with water, these beverages can become trapped under plaque, leading to long-term staining.

Specific Foods

Just as there are a number of drinks that can lead to tooth discoloration, there are a number of foods that can lead to tooth discoloration as well. These foods include citrus fruits, candy, tomato sauce, and berries, to name just a few.

Tobacco

Tobacco can very often lead to tooth discoloration as well. For this reason, smokers very often suffer from either yellowed or browned teeth.

Select Medications

There are a few medications that can cause the teeth to become discolored. These medications include select antibiotics, select antipsychotics, select antihypertensives, and most antihistamines. Note, though, that taking these medications isn't a guarantee of tooth discoloration.

Particular Diseases

There are a number of diseases that can alter the dentin and the enamel of the teeth, causing them to become discolored. Those suffering from cancer often have discolored teeth, usually due to the effects of chemotherapy treatment.

Genetics

Simply put, some people are born to have discolored teeth. It's a part of their genetics. That said, while these individuals can't avoid tooth discoloration entirely, they can take measures to combat it (like Zoom!).

Lack of Oral Health Care

The most common cause of tooth discoloration is a lack of oral health care. Failure to tend to the teeth on a regular basis allows plaque to build upon them. Over time, this plaque stains the teeth, giving them a yellowed appearance.

While teeth whitening procedures can be used to combat this problem, they're not the be-all, end-all. Proactive measures (ie. regular brushing and flossing) are needed as well.
