4 Reasons Why You Should Go to the Dentist Every 6 Months

July 8, 2019

Dental care is a concept that most people are aware of since dental habits such as brushing and flossing were forced upon them at an early age. As time passes and people get older, it’s easy to forget about keeping on top of their dental health. This is because regular dental checkups take a backseat when you assume that brushing your teeth twice a day is sufficient for keeping a visit to the dentist away. The truth is that in spite of having impeccable dental habits, a regular trip to the dentist is still a necessity. Sparkly-white teeth aren’t necessarily healthy and happy.

Although visiting the dentist every six months might seem like an expensive habit that you can forgo with the help of a toothbrush, floss, and toothpaste, these checkups are necessary for keeping your teeth in tip-top shape. The common mistake that people usually make is putting off a visit until they have a hard time using their mouth or encounter pain while chewing. By that time, it’s often too late to prevent anything else from coming up.

While the optimum frequency for dental check-ups is every two months, the minimum acceptable rate of how often you should go to the dentist to ensure that your teeth are in perfect health is twice a year. Although it might not be obvious now, you aren’t a dental professional and are most likely overlooking some risks in your dental health that can’t be spotted by your untrained eye. It’s best to visit a dentist biannually to prevent any deep rooted problems that have the potential to rack up a huge final bill.

Here are a few reasons why you should go to the dentist AT LEAST twice a year:

1. There are dental problems that need an X-ray to be treated effectively

Aside from common issues that an untrained human eye (such as yours) tends to overlook, some special dental problems require an x-ray in order to be diagnosed and treated properly. Assorted problems, such as bone decay, growing teeth, impacted wisdom teeth, jaw bone damage, and tumors or cysts can only be identified with the help of an x-ray machine and can cause even more severe problems when left undetected.

2. You might be picking up plaque, cavities, and tartar

No matter how many times you ferociously brush and floss your teeth, there are certain areas in your mouth that your toothbrush and other dental tools can’t reach. This later on leads to plaque and tartar buildup which, in turn, can result in cavities. These hard-to-reach spots accumulate food particles that later on solidify and turn into plaque, which then hardens and forms tartar. Known as the “pimples of the teeth,” tartar has the potential to erode the tooth and create cavity-forming holes that end up decaying the teeth far beyond repair. In order to avoid this dental chain reaction, you’ll have to visit your dentist regularly so that they can help prevent any instances of these conditions from occurring.

3. You’ll need to control your negative habits

Aside from maintaining dental health and spotting underlying problems, a trip to the dentist can help with controlling the effects of negative habits that could compromise the health of your teeth. While you might find yourself unable to quit a bad habit, your dentist can help to prevent bad habits from carrying over to bad dental health. If you smoke, chew tobacco, grind your teeth, clench your jaws, drink too much coffee, bite your nails, or eat hard and sticky foods, it’s best to schedule an appointment with your dentist to avoid any unwanted complications from coming up.

4. Oral cancer might be looming

As one of the trickier diseases to spot, oral cancer often goes undetected for some time due to the absence of pain. By the time you notice any issues such as swelling, lumps, or lymph nodes on your jawline or neck, it may be too late. Oral cancer hits you hard and fast. Fortunately, you can identify this disease early on by visiting your dentist regularly. He or she can perform a velscope examination that can analyze your mouth for any signs of oral cancer, which will later on lead to you being prescribed certain measures or being treated to prevent the disease from spreading even further.
