Why You Shouldn’t Take Dental Checkups for Granted

Jul 25, 2019

You may be one of the many people who are taking their oral health for granted. When was the last time you visited your dentist for a thorough checkup? You may want to clear up space in your schedule and set an appointment with your dentist because regularly visiting a dental clinic can save your life.

When you have a toothache, it can be incredibly hard to go about your daily life as normal. Your teeth and mouth’s health, in general, have a serious impact on your body. Your dentist is the one who can catch the signs of potentially serious illnesses based on your oral health.

Here are some reasons why a regular trip to the dentist can save your life:

1. Your dentist prevents infections from spreading

When there are signs of inflammation in your mouth, your dentist will put you on antibiotics for a week before any tooth extractions can be carried out.

This is because there’s an infection in your mouth, and pulling out the tooth may lead the infection spreading straight to your bone marrow and blood. It is important to stop the inflammation and remove the infection before anything else, saving you a trip to the hospital.

2. Your dentist can catch some of the early signs of cancer

A dental exam can catch very early signs of mouth and throat cancer, which is often overlooked. To survive these types of cancer, you need to be treated immediately. A thorough mouth exam that includes dental X-rays is incredibly helpful in early diagnosis.

3. Your dentist can tell when gum disease can lead to serious infections

Gum problems should not be taken lightly because it can lead to profoundly serious infections that can spread to the entire body and affect your internal organs. Gum diseases are more than just the case of your mouth. Infections from gum diseases are often detected only when you visit your dentist.

When the infection becomes septic, it’s a sure ticket to the hospital and can be life-threatening. When the infection reaches the heart, it can lead to arrhythmia and a heart attack that can potentially kill you.

4. Your dentist is trained to look for signs of illnesses that show up in the mouth tissue

More than taking care of your teeth, ensuring that they are clean and healthy, a doctor of dentistry is trained to see symptoms of diseases through your mouth.
Many diseases are caught through the tissue of the mouth. For example, your dentist will know that you are diabetic before you do because people with diabetes are prone to certain types of teeth issues. Diabetics experience periodontal issues that lead to receding gums.

Visiting your dentist regularly does not only ensure that you have a healthy mouth but can also save your life one day. Gum disease, serious infections, early signs of cancer and symptoms of diabetes—only someone who is trained can catch these by looking into your mouth.
