5 Common Types of Cosmetic Dentistry – Our Guide
May 18, 2019
The appearance of your teeth plays a significant role in how you are perceived as a person, which means that it has an effect in terms of both your professional and personal life. Therefore, it’s important that you learn how to keep your teeth in the best condition possible.
If the state of your natural teeth is not enough, however, advancements in the field have yielded several cosmetic procedures that can help to ensure that your teeth look and feel better than ever.
Here are five types of cosmetic dentistry that you may want to consider if you want to upgrade your smile:
1. Inlays and Onlays
The onlay is the top layer of the crown of a tooth, which is the area that’s most susceptible to damage. The inlay is the layer inside of the crown, which is where cavities usually form. When there’s significant damage to either of these structures of the teeth, you may need an inlay and/or onlay filler or replacement. The dentist will first take a sample of the bite of the patient to make a mold from their teeth structure. They will then measure where the refitting will need to be installed before they call the patient in for the procedure. The fillers are made in the lab to fit the patient’s natural tooth structure, meaning they will resemble your natural teeth very closely.
2. Composite Bonding
Some types of tooth damage will require your dentist to repair them using composite bonding. Again, the dentist will have to take a sample of your bite to see where they can fit the sculpts onto your teeth to resemble your natural ones. This procedure is commonly used for conditions such as tooth decay, chipped teeth, or worn-down edges and ridges.
3. Dental Veneers
Veneers are fitted to the front side of an individual’s teeth in a natural manner to improve the appearance of their smile. Veneers can be made from many different materials such as ceramic, porcelain, and composite substances. Dental veneers can be used to treat damaged teeth in a similar way to composite bonding. It can also be used for gapped, bent, and chipped teeth as well.
4. Teeth Whitening
When we smile, people expect to see a set of pearly white teeth and not yellowed and browned ones. If your pearly whites aren’t very pearly white, you may want to discuss your course of action with your cosmetic dentist right away. Yellowed teeth can be caused by many things - coffee stains, poor dental hygiene, or even genetics. Regardless of what the cause of your dull teeth may be, your dentist can bring your smile back to life with teeth whitening treatment.
5. Implants
Tooth loss is a much more concerning issue than you may think, as it can lead to significant problems such as the collapse of your dental structure. The teeth in your mouth rest against one another, pushing against each other with a certain amount of pressure. When one tooth is missing, the weight will be pressed against nothing, which means that the teeth adjacent to the absent tooth will start to cave in over with time. Dental implants are built to resemble real teeth, as well as the roots. The dentist will bury a root structure into the jaw bone to act as a base for the implant to be fitted on top of. Once the root is secured, the implant can be mounted on top of it, which will act and feel like a real tooth.
