All You Need to Know About Porcelain Veneers

May 13, 2019

There’s a lot more to a white and healthy set of teeth than aesthetics. Humans make judgments about one another based on their facial features. One of the facial features that are given the most attention is one’s teeth. After all, a smile helps to show the intention of the individual, as we perceive it to be a gesture of friendliness, sincerity, and trustworthiness.

For this reason, it’s crucial that you keep your teeth in the best condition possible to ensure that you can preserve your pearly whites. Unfortunately, no one can guarantee that there won’t be any problems with your oral health. Therefore, it’s good to know what treatment options are available when problems arise.

Porcelain veneers are one of the most common treatments for many types of dental issues. Are you wondering what exactly it is and what it can be used for? Keep reading to find out!

What are porcelain veneers?

Veneers are shells made from porcelain that is made according to the precise measurements of your teeth. Since they are custom-made, they fit perfectly. Veneers ensure that you have a set of beautiful pearly whites to reveal to the world. If you have a yellow, crooked, gapped, or broken teeth, porcelain veneers are often the treatment that your dentist will recommend.

Are veneers permanent?

Veneers are usually replaced every ten to twenty years, depending on how well you care for them. Although we can consider them a long-term solution, veneers are not permanent.

How are veneers fitted?

The first thing the dentist will do is determine whether or not veneers are a viable option for you. In some cases, a patient’s teeth may be too damaged for veneers, which means that some other treatment option may be required.

If the dentist determines that you are a good candidate for veneers, they will start by getting a print of your bite, which they will then use as a mold for the veneers. The dentist will remove the top layer of the enamel and apply an adhesive substance to the surface of the teeth before applying the veneers onto the surface of the teeth. Once the veneers are fitted, they will be bonded to the enamel before they are cleaned, smoothened, and polished.

Is the procedure painful?

90% of the time, the process is not at all painful, but you may feel some sensitivity in your mouth due to enamel removal. However, there shouldn’t be any significant pain that you need to be worried about.

What are the concerns about porcelain veneers?

Porcelain veneers are prone to breaking, as they aren’t the most durable material. In the case that this happens, you can expect to pay a rather large sum of money for repairs.

After the first week of having the veneers fitted, you should avoid hard foods such as nuts, chips, hard candy, and even large chunks of apples for that matter. These foods may cause your veneers to move out of alignment, as the bonding may not have properly fused.

What are the dentistry requirements for veneers?

If you want to get veneers, you must not have any record of previous veneer bonding or significant damage to your enamel layer. Additionally, you will need a strong and healthy set of teeth to ensure that they can make it through the enamel removal process.

What is the difference between porcelain and ceramic veneers?

Porcelain is much whiter and smoother than ceramic material, giving it a much more pleasing aesthetic appeal, as well as a closer resemblance to natural teeth.
