All About Periowave Laser Treatment for Gum Disease

Dec 14, 2021

Did you know that 7 out of 10 people in Canada will develop a form of gum disease at least once in their lives? Gum disease is one of the most common dental problems in Canada and when left untreated, it can quickly become a serious problem. Fortunately, there are ways to treat gum disease even once it has become severe.

One of the best ways to treat gum disease is with Periowave laser treatment. But what is Periowave laser treatment for periodontal disease, you might ask? It is quite a unique and relatively new treatment that can improve the health of your gums in a short period of time in a pain-free fashion.

Keep reading and learn more about this laser treatment and why gum disease is so harmful to your oral health.

What You Need to Know About the Dangers of Gum Disease

Gum disease often happens to those who don't often brush or floss their teeth. When you don't clean your teeth on a regular basis, certain strains of bacteria in your mouth will start to take a toll on your oral health. In particular, when you eat, the bacteria will consume the remaining food particles in your mouth and produce acid as a byproduct.

This acid will start to break down your tooth enamel and irritate your gums. This can lead to tooth decay and cavities. Besides that, the same bacteria also produce a substance known as dental plaque. This plaque is a soft and sticky substance that covers the teeth.

You can easily remove it by brushing your teeth. However, if you leave plaque on the surface of your teeth, it will eventually become another substance known as tartar or calculus. Tartar is a very hard, white or yellow substance that often builds up at the base of your teeth and between your teeth.

It is too hard to remove on your own with a toothbrush or floss, so you would need to go to the dentists office to remove it. If left untreated, tartar can start to irritate your gums and cause gingivitis. Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease.

Many people actually have gingivitis without even knowing it. This is because gingivitis usually does not produce any symptoms at first. However, your gums may occasionally bleed when you brush or floss.

The Details

This happens because gingivitis makes your gums swollen and sensitive and therefore more sensitive to bleeding. As gingivitis gets worse, it will eventually become periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is quite a serious condition.

It involves the recession of your gum line which can make your teeth very sensitive. It also involves the reddening of the gums, gum pain and sensitivity, and bleeding gums. In severe cases, periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss and tooth infections.

These tooth infections can sometimes spread to other teeth and destroy your oral health. In some cases, these dental infections can also spread to the rest of the body and can be very serious or even fatal. The only true way to prevent these problems from occurring is to brush and floss your teeth every day.

However, if your gum disease has already progressed to a more advanced point, you may have to opt for Periowave laser treatment.

What Is Periowave Laser Treatment Exactly?

As mentioned before, gum disease has a lot to do with harmful oral bacteria. Bacteria are what cause gum disease to advance and get worse, often leading to inflammation, swelling, and infection. Periowave laser treatment works by destroying the harmful bacteria around your gums, especially within gum pockets which are normally hard to reach.

These gum pockets, also known as periodontal sockets, are important because they help keep your teeth in place. If these pockets start to decay, your teeth will become loose and you may even lose them. In the past, to fix advanced periodontal disease, it would be necessary to cut away the diseased gum tissue.

This, of course, is quite an invasive and painful procedure. This is not to mention that it could seriously change the shape of your gum line. This kind of surgery would also include several weeks of healing time.

If you have a busy schedule, the last thing you want to deal with is recovery time or painful procedures. Periowave laser treatment is much different compared to these older treatments because it does not involve the removal of gum tissue. Instead, the laser removes whatever bacteria may be latching onto your gums and causing gum inflammation.

Periowave is a non-invasive treatment, so you don't have to worry about going under the knife to fix your gum problems. You also don't need to worry so much about the healing process because, as mentioned before, Periowave does not involve any cutting or removing of your gum tissue. There is also very little chance of infection from this treatment.

The Benefits of Periowave

This is important because the traditional way of improving gum disease is to cut away at the disease gums. This results in a lot of bleeding which gives the bacteria in your mouth a perfect opportunity to enter your body and create an infection. This often occurred in the past and would lead to even more dental procedures to fix the problem.

Fortunately, you don't have to worry about that when you opt for Periowave laser treatment. You also don't have to worry about the procedure being painful either. Because Periowave doesn't use heat or damage the gum tissue in any way, it should be a relatively painless procedure.

This is not to mention that the side effects after the procedure will be quite minimal, especially when compared to older treatment options. You won't have to worry so much about typical side effects such as gum swelling, redness, or pain. But what should you expect from the procedure if you do decide to opt for Periowave laser treatment?

What to Expect From the Periowave Laser Treatment Procedure

To start, your dentist will completely numb the treatment area. This will ensure that you won't feel any discomfort during the procedure. Once your gums are numb, your dentist will then use a small fiberoptic device which will be inserted into your gum pocket.

Again, because your gums will be numb by this point, you won't feel this insertion. After the fiberoptic tip is activated, the laser treatment will begin. From there, the fiberoptic laser will start to destroy and remove whatever bacteria may be inhabiting your gum pocket.

This laser can also remove parasites. In some cases, gum disease may be caused by small parasites which irritate and infect the gum tissue. However, it is more common for gum disease to be caused by bacteria.

After that, your dentist will then go into the same gum pocket with a special ultrasonic cleaner. This is a very powerful device that can break up tartar that has built up within the gum pocket and also between teeth and at the base of your teeth. This is important because, as mentioned before, tartar irritates the gums and is a big culprit when it comes to the development of gum disease.

What You Need to Know

By removing not only harmful bacteria but also tartar from your teeth and gums, this procedure gives your gums a chance to breathe. This will also reduce the inflammation and swelling that your gums may be experiencing as a result of gum disease. Once the ultrasonic tool breaks up and removes the tartar, your dentist will then reintroduce the fibreoptic tool back into your gum pocket.

Doing this will clean up any remaining bacteria that may have been reintroduced into the gum socket by the tartar. This entire procedure usually can be completed within the span of two hours. However, if your gum disease is quite severe or if you have a lot of tartar development, the procedure may take even longer.

Also, keep in mind that the Periowave treatment is not a permanent way of keeping gum disease at bay.

Once Periowave improves your gum health, you will need to continue to keep your gums healthy by brushing and flossing your teeth on a regular basis. That way, you can keep your overall oral health in good shape.
